Serials we love thee

Nice Humour that I got from one of my friend...:-)

The other day I decided to phone my paati. I was sure she would have finished all her morning work and would have just started to relax. She always complained that I don't speak enough to her. I thought that I would give her no reason to complain that day. When she answered, I told her enthusiastically that it was me. I was pretty pleased with myself, thinking that I was making her happy.

"Enna paati, epadi irukkel?"

"Nanna irukendima...Enna vishesham?"

"Onnum illai.."

"Enna sheri...Bye"

She put the phone down......My paati putting the phone down on ME? Maybe she was angry...I must have done something to hurt her. This is not like my paati.

I called again...I HAD to find out why she behaved like this. Paati never speaks curtly to me...

When she answered the phone she was really very angry.

"Enna da kondhaeyc pinneyum koopadarai? Eppo naan busy aakum...pinne peshalam."

"Paati, phone vachudadenko. Enna? Yean pinne peshalam chollarel?"

"Eppo, archanai pookal nadanthindurukku...Enakku ponam...Onkitta naan pinna pesharen."

"Archanai pookala?Adu ennadu?"

"Pinna chollaren. Bye."

I was wonder struck! What was happening?

After sometime she called me back. She explained that from morning 10.30 am to afternoon 1.00 pm and from evening 7.30pm to 11.00 pm, she is usually busy. She watches TV during these times and that she hates being disturbed in between. Six whole hours in front of the idiot box! What has happened to my paati?

She further amazed me with her ability to recall all the incidents and all names and all characters parading across the screen. My mama was complaining that her BP is increasing, because she is worrying for some fictious TV character. She has gone to the extent of becoming friends with another old lady who has an added advantage of having an inverter at home.

If there is a current cut, this friend called up my paati or my paati calls her up, to update on the missed portion of the serials. These incidents seem to be happening in almost all households across Kerala and Tamilnadu. All paatis and mamas and mamis are watching these soap-operas and mega-serials. These are literally storming the agraharams and other Indian households. The streets in the gramams are all quite after 7.30pm , the time when the sagas begin...Sthree, Bharya, Chithi, Vazhkai, Soolam, Nimmadi unkal
choice, and what not !!

We attended a marriage some days ago and I must say that I was not really surprised to see the marriage hall emptying by 8.30 pm.Special arrangements had been made for the boys side to view the serials. Can it be missed? There was no sambhandhi or ponnathukaral in that room. Only serial lovers !

The atmosphere during the serial was tense and no interruptions were entertained. At the end of the serial, there was almost an hour long discussion whether it was alright if Suseela marries Pulippandi? (Not to worry, those are not the names of the bride and groom whose marriage they had come to attend!). No real decisions were made but then chewing the cud is nice, I suppose!

There was such unity and feeling of oneness in that room. There were no strangers. Anyone who knew something (even if, be it the name of 1 character) was welcomed into the group. And the ones with less knowledge were enlightened.

I suppose, I did miss the sambandhi chandai and the gossips. But this was great. Everyone had a common subject to talk about and everyone became everyone elses friend.

I don't know whether these serials are doing good or harming the society. Some people do say that people are wasting their time in front of the idiot boxes. But the positive effects of a feeling of brother-hood (or should I say comrade-viewership) are not being highlighted properly, I guess !

Anyway, I have to run. My mother-in-law is calling me. I have to finish my dinner and my nightly chores before Chithi starts. They are initiating me into it today. Cannot be left out from knowing about the happening things, right?
